Upon further reflection it seems that the publication of firmware versions to parties outside the AMI system could be a good thing. An Asset Management System could benefit from this information. The type of data to be published (which is ordinarily kept private within the AMI system) could include:
- Meter base code version
- Meter patch code version
- Meter "program" ID
- NIC firmware version
- Operating system version
- Security package version
- Other COTS firmware component version
Proposed Solution
Each vendor may have something slightly different to declare. Asset management work is highly customized.
It seems that one solution would be to identify the firmware version as a measurement with a ReadingTypeID, then with the Readings.xsd message, use the Names class to overload the ID with additional detail. Or, there may be other fields that could be populated in the schema with the detailed information. More discussion is needed amongst the Part 9 team. There is potentially also a Part 4 message that could be leveraged.
