Short Proposal:

IEC 62351-6 needs to be updated to correct this issue. It is currently under revision and may need to change/extend the enumerated values due to changes in 62351-4.

61850-6 INF states:

2748 The mandatory Authentication element defines, in the case of a device description the
2749 authentication possibilities, in case of a device instantiated in a plant the method(s) to be
2750 used for authentication. If all attributes are missing, the default method is none (i.e. no
2751 authentication, meaning that the attribute none has the value true). The exact meaning of the
2752 other methods, especially weak and strong, is defined in the stack mappings (SCSMs).

Description

IEC 61850-6 leaves the definition of the meaning of the authentication options to the SCSM. However, neither 8-1 nor IEC 62351-6 seem to define the meaning of password, weak, strong or certificate. I think I know what they mean by the words themselves but I can’t find the definition in the standards.
